R/GameDesign is a community ONLY about Game Design, NOT Game Development in general. It's about the theory and crafting of systems, mechanics, and rulesets in games. ![]() Game Design is a subset of Game Development that concerns itself with WHY games are made the way they are. This might be a bit difficult to retrofit, but is probably doable without "breaking" what's in place. Perhaps even give him an actual role in the gameplay by allowing him to gain levels in "meta" stats/stats that influence the crew as a group (rather than as a combatant). The last option I see is the most involved one: make the player create this admin character, and have him be an actual character that follows the crew around even though the crew might change on a dime. This would help maintain a little bit of ludonarrative congruence, but I feel like I would still end up painting myself into a corner if I tried something more involved, story wise. I have thought about an immaterial presence in the story, sort of like the player character in Darkest Dungeon - an admin of sorts. It also detracts from the concept of a pirate crew, if ALL parts of it are interchangeable.Īt the same time, I don't want to have fixed characters (since, much like in Pokemon, part of the fun will be building up the crew you want to play as). Or even why Captain Long John Silver was the one to sign up to the quest to take the McGuffin from point A to B, only for Blackbeard to show up with it instead. You would have to handwave away why the captain and crew have changed but they still want to carry out the quests that make up the plot. I thought about just ignoring the implications, but I feel like this detracts a bit from any plot. The issue is, how can the player character be thematically inserted in the story? In Pokemon (and similar games) you have a trainer figure, or a leader figure, that is always part of the party (sometimes merely outside of battles). ![]() The game is based around creating a party (think Suikoden and Pokemon mixed together), thematically based on pirates. I think I have a solid idea for the actual gameplay mechanics, but there is one niggling thing that has been in the back of my mind. ![]() I have been collecting ideas for a game that I have been designing for a while (with the intention of one day bringing it to life).
